Wonderful Dutch Canal and River boat trip in Negombo, Sri Lanka

Take a boat trip down the Hamilton Canal, which was once the lifeblood of Dutch trade, and the Maha Oya to see tropical village life by the shoreline. The day-to-day lives of Negombo's fisher folk may be quite a dramatic difference in simplicity as you observe them go about their daily activities and routines.

You'll pass through a natural bamboo forest, taste some local refreshment in the form of coconut toddy, and pause for a brief swim in the shallows. The Hamilton Canal (also known as the Dutch Canal) is a 14.5 km (9.0 mi) canal in Sri Lanka that connects Puttalam to Colombo through Negombo. The canal was built by the British in 1802 and finished in 1804. Its purpose was to remove saline water from the Muthurajawela marshes. Gavin Hamilton, the Government Agent of Revenue and Commerce, inspired the canal's name.
